Ride Coventry - Est 1998 - Rider Owned and Operated
BLOCKLESS COMBAT THREE

Entering into its third year, Blockless Combat was bigger and better than ever, thanks to a great turnout from all over Britain
and massive support from its sponsors, which included Etnies, Ride skate shop, Toddtwist skate shop Epic skatepark,
Shiners distribution and Mission-Print. Overall, 45 people entered this year, with 150 people turning up to watch, the
sessions fuelled by the sounds of Slayer, Lard and Metallica to mention a few. Like previous years, Blockless centred on
comps in Epic skateparks bowl and vert, being separated into A and B groups, both of which were judged by two 45 second
runs with additional points for gnarling out. Also, this years bowl comp saw the welcome addition of a 4ft vert tombstone,
which upped the ante for those who wanted to burl out.

The B group bowl comp saw more entrants than ever, with 20 people putting their names down for the event. Highlights
from the B group bowl comp included extension annihilation from Meanwhile Kev; putting down axle 270 out, pivot fakies
and b/s tailslides. Other madness included Tez Aldersleys b/s smiths and Reese Douglass pointed rock fakies, as well as
flowing, powerful lines from Joe Atkins and out of control madness from Steve Delves.

The A group comp saw solid runs from several of the UKs old guns, including Jim Skin and Sean Goff, but it was the
younger skaters who rocked out, Daryl Nobbs putting down two amazing runs which included a b/s 270 out of the hip and f/s
rocks on the extension. Park local Lewis put down some rad lines, featuring 5-0 fakies and switch b/s 5050s around the
corners. There were also good runs from Leamington locals Ed Cullen and Jack Robinson.

Again, the B group vert was bigger than ever, with entrants from all over, coming from as far as Barrow-In-Furness, Cornwall
and London! Jim Langran had only just got off the plane returning from his holidays half an hour before the vert comp was
due to start! It was clear from the warm up runs that Sam Bosworth was going to be the overall winner, pushing 5ft
methods, b/s nosegrinds, rodeos and gay twists. Meanwhile Kev shocked all with his padless runs, putting down big b/s
and f/s airs and rolling in f/s into a solid air to fakie. It was also clear to everyone that several of the younger riders will be
ones to look out for in the future, consistent runs coming from Reese Douglas, Ollie Binns and Jim Langran.

Like the B group vert event, the A group vert comp saw the younger riders rocking out, alongside the old guard, with Paul Luc
Ronchetti again oozing his powerful consistent style in both runs, making b/s 360 varial after a massive 540. Sam Bosworth
stepped up with two more amazing runs hot off his winning the B Group, competing against the like of  Mike Edwards, Jim
Skin Sean Goff and John Nixon, all of whom had good runs, Nixon putting down two f/s inverts and Goffy dominating the
ramp with massive b/s ollies and several 540 attempts. Managing to make it to the comp despite his missus being due to
give birth, Wingy put down his trademark b/s disasters and b/s bonelesses with style. Pete Dossett turned up just in time to
put down runs featuring his stylish caballerials and stalled handplants.

It was defiantly the best Blockless yet, many thanks to those who sponsored and supported it, as well as those who turned
up see you again next year!

BLOCKLESS COMBAT TWO
Blockless Combat has now reached the ripe old age of
two, maturing like a fine wine in the fruitful boughs of Epic
skatepark, nestled in the heart of Britain’s second city.
Unlike most things that get older, Blockless is getting
better, pulling some of the best new bowl and vert riders in
Britain to it, as well as the crusty old folk too. It’s great to be
able to see new faces at events like this, hopefully they’ll all
be able to come to the next event! Judging the comps were
Coventry’s Steve Spain and two of Birmingham’s finest,
Skif and Lewis. The comps were divided into A and B
groups, based on ability, allowing for fair judging and
competition.
Jim Skin and Trawler
Trophy decks and boozey prizes for first three placings in the A group
categories.
B GROUP BOWL COMP
Things kicked off with the Bowl comp, the B Group comp taking place first.
There was a wide mix of age and style, several of the smaller rippers
destroying the hip. Little Joe in particular was powering around the bowl
with force, as were Paul Luc and Sam Beckett. Shocking runs came from
Daryl Nobbs, ripping the tranny with f/s rock slides and super fast grinds.
However, first place went to Jacob Anderson, who threw two solid runs and
finished off the hip with kickflip transfer.

A GROUP BOWL COMP
Commentary was provided by Mr Sean Goff, delighting the crowd by
commentating on his own run in the A group bowl comp, mic in hand. It was
clear that the bowl comp was going to be dominated by locals from the
start, but an amazing run came from Jasper who had the bowl dialled. Top
place went to Cov's own Jim T Skin, whilst the next four placings were also
Coventarians, Luke almost beating Skin with his heavy burling and Cooper
doing super well with his trademark half cab lips around the corner.

A GROUP VERT COMP
Instead of being judged in two runs from each competitor, the A group vet
comp was judged through a knockout head to head session. This showed
the crowd who was the most consistent as well as who had the most
stamina! Everyone was stoked to see both Paul Luc and Sam Beckett skating
well, watch out for these two rippers in the future. Cov's own Jim and Luke did
well, placing fifth and eighth respectively. All the way from Warrington was Mr
Dosset, styling his runs with consistency, Lasting all the way to the finals and
placing a well deserved third. The final head off between Sean Goff and Dave
Allen saw Dickie come out on top with some of his trademark ferocious pogo
airs.

B GROUP VERT COMP
As one of only two accessible vert comps this year in Britain, Blockless was
sure to be an occasion to go off to. The standard of the B Group had gone up
yet again, with some awesome runs being put down by Kev and Darren
Quinn. The younger lot didn’t disappoint either, with Jim Langran landing a
fakie 360 shuv as well as powering around the vert with f/s ollies and airs.
New faces Sam Pounds impressed, as did Southam vert newcomer Daryl
Nobbs. However, Accrington local Jasper and Kev from London took well
deserved first and second places, ripping the ramp so hard in both runs.

Again, if you missed out on this you were unlucky as the comp was a great day, with some amazing skating talent coming
through from all over the country to compete and have fun. Thanks to Epic skatepark for holding the comp, Shiners
distribution and Jim and Ali Skin for providing the trophy decks and prizes - See you there next year!
Trawler
Saturday - The trip to Penzance was inspired by a dual 40th birthday celebration that
will be occuring this year, namely for Mr Chris 'Magnum' Harris and Rab from Windsor.
Although their birthdays are months apart, this was one of the only conviniant weekends
for such an event to occur. Happy birthday dudes! The day started with the Eastern bikes
demo at the Holbrooks bowls before getting camping equipment packed. Watching
Adam Banton, Leigh Ramsdell, Randy Brown, Allen Cooke and Kernow's own Mark
Theaker was sure to get us amped for a roadtrip. Come 4pm Jim, Luke and myself
were off to pick up Goff from Oxford. How Luke’s car manages to continue to exist is a
mystery, I'm beginning to believe it's held together more by it's own character than
anything else. On picking up Goff, we headed southbound to Penzance, taking six hours
to make the journey down. On arriving at the most obscure but ideal campsite named
Goon Nallas (sp? -  I’ll find out because I’d recommend this place to anyone), we were
greeted by Colin and Pete from Liverpool, Rab from Windsor, Rob from Sheffield and
Magnum from Brum. The campsite is owned and maintained by some spaced out hippy
guy who doesn't seem to know exactly what is going on. However, as soon as we
arrived he was thrusting complimentary bottles of Stella at us, so he can't have been all
that bad. After getting the tents up in the twilight, a fire was built and the wee hours were
whittled away by boozey shit talk laughs.

Sunday - Picking up a tent for £12.00 sounds like a bargain doesn't it? However, no
matter how cool it looks with pentagrams and inverted crosses on it, a £12.00 tent isn't
guaranteed to keep the rain out. Goff described it as a "Mothercare play-pen", which is a
frighteningly accurate description. Anyhow, the morning came with egg and bacon
batches from the campsite farmhouse followed by a proper breaky at Tescos. We
stocked up on water and whatnot and headed to Penzance park, which took me by
surprise. Nothing under 8ft, rad transitions and layout finished off with a super smooth
surface. The place just screams lines, you don't even have to hit the coping to have a
good time, carving it is reward enough. Trawler turned up and ripped the place to
shreds. Several hours were spent there before we decided to head into Penzance town
itself for food. Turned out the shop was right next to a rad metal 6ft mini ramp, so much
fun was had on that! Another quick session at the bowls ended about 5ish, with
everyone eager for some food. Unfortunately, Colin, Pete and Rab had to leave, but
Trawler was added to our number. We all had a pub meal at the local washed down
with pints of the ominous sounding DOOM BAR. Its really cool to hang out with the older
skaters. It’s great being to ask about old stories and find out new, more personal stuff
about skating. It’s something that keeps you eternally young, all skaters can relate too
each other in some way or another.
Whilst we were eating, it was pissing it down, the incessant rain not filling me with
confidence for the well-being of the superstructure of the 'Mothercare' tent. On returning
to the campsite, I found nearly everything in it damp, which meant that tent migration for
Goff and I was in order. Between the bouts of rain, we got another fire together and
repeated the previous night, listening to Sabbath and looking at the stars into the small
hours.

Monday - After packing up the settling the bill by posting cash through the letterbox (the
owner hadn't been seen since the Sunday morning) we headed for some Tesco
breakfast before returning to the campsite to take down the tents. Penzance bowls were
sessioned again with much filming and photography going on. It was really good to get
a few lines down there, it felt as if you’d really worked for them. A favourite was anything
that included a f/s grind, the coping made such a cool noise as you ground it. Towards
4pm were packed up and headed towards Tuckingmill skatepark in Camboune, which
was on the way home. Despite looking really good, Tuckingmill was a bitch to skate
because of shitty joins in the concrete. However, we had a good hour there, skating the
bigger bowl and having loads of fun in that. As 6pm wheeled around, we decided to call
it a day and head home, not before spraypainting the Ride logo all over the park and
furnishing the bowl with a massive pentagram. Goodbyes were said and the long drive
back to Coventry via Oxford took about five hours. It was cool to stop off at Goffy's house
for tea and a viewing of Trawler's video section for an upcoming video part.
My bed was attacked with fierce sleeping that night. Cheers to Luke and Jim for driving
and thanks for the invite – the trip was immense!

RIDE AFTER SALE SESSION

After the Ride sale over the weekend, what better way to wrap up things
than a big street skate? The turnout was great for skaters and BMXer’s
alike with everyone meeting around 4pm-ish at the Library block.
Everyone was stoked to hear about Joe Skin ollieing up and then flipping
off the block, gnarling it up before everyone else.
The session moved onto the banks above the upper prescient, which
saw Jim Skin have a rock and roll, Matt Aldersly nailing b/s tailslides on
the blocks and Chris Blockly bombing, around pulling stylish wallrides to
fakie. Russ Perry managed to destroy he knee after bashing it off a
balustrade, later leaving to ease the pain via booze. The session ground
to a halt as Lee Titmus started his assault on the rail, which everyone
was stoked to see him nail several times, unfortunately not pulling the
whole thing. However, his effort still deserved the £10 Ride voucher he
won for the effort.
After several warnings over the city centre tannoy, we moved to the
Magistrate Courts, stopping on the way to session the 9set, which Danny
Wishart casually ollied and Duve nailed an ice-pick on the rail, which
caused many people to fowl themselves, his burliness getting him a
Ride voucher. The Courts were next with its 6 stairs and benches being
promptly hit –up. Craig Cooper snapped his deck with a stomped
boardslide attempt down the rail, which led to his early retirement to the
pub. Apart from that, the stairs saw action in the form of Terry Aldersly’s
kickflip and Danny Wishart’s kickflip.
After a while, Titmus eyed up another rail, which unfortunately didn’t get
done as the run up was super tight and awkward. On the way to the
University 11 stair, Matt Aldersly smoothly tailslide to fakie the mini-block
on the Court service 9 stair and was cocky enough to attempt it backside
too!
The Uni 11 stair doesn’t see much action, so when Danny Wishart
nailed it within 5 attempts, everyone was super-stoked. Danny got a
voucher for his hammer-time, which will no doubt help his bruised heels!
The session then moved to the University itself, the blind-bump stairs
being the focus of attention. Chris Foy missed out on a massive pop-
shuv down the larger 7 stair despite his best efforts. However, Phil
Bridge managed to pull several stair clearances, including a 180 down
the larger set and a clearance to icepick on a bin down the smaller 4
stairs. Skatewise, the highlight of the session was Matt Aldersly’s blind
bump 8-stair clearance to immediate blind bump 4-stair kickflip, being
given a £10 Ride voucher for his efforts.
The session had started to wind down, and moved on toward Shelton
Square with its 3 stairs sets. Unfortunately, Council planning had
rendered the blocks unskatable, due to the immovable wooden planters
in the way, so the BMXer’s didn’t have much of a session on the go.  After
several valiant attempts at a kickflip, Joe Skin had to retire due to
hometime, as did many of us because of knackered and sore legs.
A good skate was had by all and thankfully no one took home any lasting
injuries. Thanks to all that turned out!

BOWL COMPETITION

Its a shame if you missed this event as the day really went off. It
attracted people from as far as Scotland, Liverpool  and Norfolk,
with everyone super stoked on the riding witnessed in the warm
ups. This is the first time A and B group competitions have been
held in England for a long time and its a great oppurtuinity to
meet skaters from all over.
Things kicked off at around 12pm, with the B group bowl comp
for the younger riders. Everyone was impressed with the high
level of riding, Epic's kidney being torn to shreads. Big Woody
from Blackpool provided MCing  and commentry, getting the
crowd and skaters amped alike. The standard of competition
was extremely high, the jam format proving to suit some skaters
rather than others. Memorable runs included Alex Halfords 360
transfers over the hip and Sam Clifton's consistant and solid
runs. Once the top four had been picked, it was time for the older
B Group bowl comp, which was equally tight.
The A Group bowl comp came next, with entrants ages ranging
from 21 to 41. The A Group was not up for any product prizes, as
all of that was going toward the B Group events. There were
some shocking runs from the likes of the locals as well as those
who had travelled a great deal to get to Epic, notable runs
included both Andy Scott's and Stu Graham's footplant madness
and Luke Hassett's trick to trick lines around the 6ft beast.
Trawler, from Plymouth also laid down some tight lines around
the bowl, all the better for his punk rock socks.

CHEERS!

The great thing about this comp was that it brought together a
group of skaters who want to skate ramp - be it a bowl, mini or a
vert together. It was shocking to see the younger and older
skaters alike fully going off, so much effort and passion went into
the runs. Thanks to the sponsers and supporters of the comp,
Shiner Distribution, Ride Skateshop, Missionprint.co.uk and Epic
Skatepark.
Blockless combat will be back as an annual event, bigger and
better next year. It's planned for late to mid autumn, so be sure to
keep an eye on the main site for further details. In the mean time,
get to Epic and get your comp lines down for the big event!
VERT COMPETITION

The vert competiton standards were suprisingly high,
with young skaters showing experiance beyond their
years on the 13.5ft ramp. This competition was based
on the best of two runs, which worked well. Jacob from
Blackpool threw down some shocking all-air lines,
included his second run which was a f/s air marathon.
Other sick runs included Daz Quinn's solid lines and
good use of the entire ramp, and Paul Luc's incredible
consistancy and style.
Competition in the A Group was equally tough, which
made for excellent viewing. Mattias Nylen, the eventual
winner put down some shocking tricks, such as f/s
blunts and b/s tailslides. Andy Scott was,..well, Andy
Scott and did super relaxed Scotty things, kickflip indy's,
super styled airs, you name it. Luke Hassett put on an
awesome show, with consistant and powerful lines.

DOWNLOAD 2004 - WORDS BY JIM SKIN

Yeah, absolutely great weekend, with the exception of Sean Goff
breaking his arm. Got to the hotel with nobody there. Eventually more
people started to arrive, with Cab, PLG, Glifberg, Simon Tabron, Nicky
Guerrero, Jamie Bestwick, Kojie Craft – then I knew I was in the shit!
Friday’s practice was cut short with Sean breaking his arm, and the rest
of the day being spent at Derby’s hospital.
The Saturday saw hordes of people arrive for the festival. Everybody
skated their prelims, and out of Dave Allen, Jason Lunn, Trawler, Andy
Scott, Pete King, and myself, the only to make it through to skate the
final on Sunday were Jason and Pete. I was a little disappointed as I
was really into skating the bowl for longer.
The finals took place on the Sunday, as did the best trick comp, which
was the highlight of the weekend for me. Watching the world’s finest
skate from the platform whilst listening to the likes of Slayer, Sham 69,
Sex Pistols on the sound system was amazing. PLG’s fakie 720 and
b/s shuvit nose-grind lipslides secured first place in the best trick for
him whilst Rob Lorefice aged 15 made heelflip varial stales and Nick
Guerrero landed fakie heelflip f/s grabs.
I only got the chance to see parts of the bands sets, namely The
Distillers, Slayer, Metallica, and the Suicide Girls. Hopefully the chance
will come up again to do something like Download again.

These are all from the old frontsiderocker site, but I though it'd be cool to pop them up here as they feature the Ride lot in
some way or another. Plus it's good to be nostelgic. Don't get too excited though you jittery jpeg junkies, there's no pictures

Bristol and Back Again

I'd been looking forward to going to Bristol since Trawler had sent me the email for his "Christmas Jam". Two carloads of
us made our way down, in which were Jim, Joe, Daz, Luke, Russ, Matt, Tez, and myself. We arrived about 2ish, and it was
clear that Matt, Tez and Russ were not impressed, culminating in Russ's "Give me my money back-this park is shite"
statement. That said, they went to look for some streets spots whilst the rest of us padded up. The ramp was not how I
remembered it, it was slippier than before and I really didn't enjoy it. Luke didn't seem to be having much fun either. Daz,
and Skin got straight into it though, which was good to see. Daz has really come along in his vert skating, powering his way
around with some rad alley oop grinds. Other attendees included Trawler, Sean Goff, Scott Nixon, Welsh Owen, and Morfa
Mike. It was great to see Pob, Whip and Jim (Pob's just reminded me of his name-cheers dude!) for a skate. Jason Lunn
also popped down, and despite skating well, suffered some brutal slams on the slippy vert.
We were pretty fed up of "Skate and Ride" which apart from the vert seemed to be designed as the anti-skatepark. We got
some chips and headed out toward Hengrove bowls, an outdoor skatepark.
Everyone seemed to be having a rad time at Hengrove, with Matt and Tez getting some rad lines down, Russ landing some
massive tweaked indy,s, and Jim grinding over a huge gap. Pob Whip and dude seemed to be having fun too, with Pob
showing off is custom filming handle (flashy!)
We left about 8ish, after a horrible McDonalds, only to get stuck in loads of traffic. Queue taking the piss out of fellow
motorists and rocking out to Cradle to pass the time. In retrospect, Bristol's only indoor skatepark's future looks bleak. I
know I'd only go for another get together. It was good to get away from epic for a week though!

See you in Stockport

I was stoked to be going to Stockport, as it was a bit cheeky of me to phone Skin at the last minute and scrounge a lift.
Packed into the cruiser were Skin, Goff, Russ and myself. Stockport’s about 100 miles away, not a great distance, but it
seemed a bit awkward to get to. After a few wee wee stops, we arrived at the park, which was quite busy. The park itself is
split over three rooms on two levels. The entrance floor incorporates the beginners and rhythm/street section, whilst below
all this is the vert, mini and bowl. Suffice to say, we didn't venture out of this room! The bowl itself is a bitch to skate, and
when we arrived there were loads of kids bombing around thing thing with aplomb. Early grab f/s airs seem to be a big
thing up north. The mini ramp is rad, quite wide and with fast, sticky-out coping. The vert is quite small and whippy, but
never-the-less great fun to skate. It was good to see Rogie up there, who was bombing around the mini and later pivot-
fakied the vert. He also had a sick run after the main bowl comp had finished, which shocked me. Super good stuff.
The vert comp was the first of the comps, and after getting used to its trannies, there was some rad skating going on. Andy
Scott clearly dominated the thing, pulling massive f/s airs, whilst Sean Goff went all Sean Goff on the thing. Dickie too went
off, with some nice half-cab airs. I think it was Dan-Z who won the vert comp, having some solid runs with a big smile on his
face the whole time.
However, it was the bowl comp that saw the raddest skating, with its snaking format, the whole event was carnage! I was
lucky enough for Russ to film it, and the footage is gold!
Highlights included, Andy Scott b/s tailslide revert 1/3 of the way around the deep end, Scott Nixon footplant off wall back into
the deep end, Jim Skin having a roll-in-revert in the deep end, and plenty of other madness. Trawler was riding it well, with
some consistent runs and lengthy grinds.
I'm not entirely sure how, but Sean and Jim both came second, whilst a dude called Warren won the event. He was sick,
and looked so combatable in the thing. For his efforts, he was rewarded possibly the best trophy ever, a mini lavatory on a
plinth-WINNER!
We left the park and headed towards a sketchy pub to chill out and laugh at things. It had been a really good day and I can't
wait to get back there. There are just so many possibilities in that bowl, and I'd love to check out the rest of the park. On the
way home we went down the new M6 Toll road, which apparently really made Russ's day.
Twas a good day altogether and a great start to the New Year. Lets hoe this year will be full of expeditions of the like. Roll on
the next one wherever it be,..

Night Of The Living Dead 2003

The Night of the Living Dead has achieved some infamy over the last few years. This was officially the third and "last"
NOTLD, but its been going on for at least 5 years in a purer form. I think that it is the last NOTLD in this form, crowded and
diluted by its own success. Personally I believe that the event will return, albeit smaller and better than now. Unfortunately
these things happen, so skate for the moment.
The losers, Craig, Darren, Duve, Foy and myself set out at around 7:30ish, bombing up the M6 fuelled only by cheap smut
and fizzy continental lagers (not me! I was driving!). The signs of a good evening were apparent, both a squirming fox and a
dog running down the fast lane were taken as divine signals from a higher power that the evening would be a good'un.
After Darren correcting my shit sense of direction, we arrived and had to queue to get into Rampworx (??) The place was
packed, and there were a surprising amount of females there, which was a welcome change from sweaty skater men. The
bowl was completely rammed, I'm quite sure none of us got to skate it during the whole evening, so we split up and found
our own fun in the fun-filled warehouse.  I headed over to the spine, and was stoked to see Poulet and Whip, both of whom
were having it on the spine. It was cool to see Julien Moylneux as well, who is the nicest bloke in the world. The atmosphere
was super good, despite the harshest snake session I've ever been in. Everyone was cool about being dropped in on and it
was proof that human beings can live in a state of nature, proving that skateboarders are fundamentally good people!
Pumpkin head made an appearence, and then was destroyed by a blind footplant. Russ Perry was having some
ridiculously high transfers over the spine, landing a rad tailgrab, surprising himself landing it as well as he did. Darren, Jim
and Luke spent a fair amount of time on the midi ramp which is bigger than I remembered. Jim knocking out his trademark
smiths, and Darren powering around with aplomb. The death match kicked off around 1ish, and unfortunately I saw all of it
through my camera, which sucked. Mr Howard Cook won, which was apparently well deserved (I'm not arguing-Its just I
didn't see much of it!) It was also around this time that Dave Allen collided with some kid, causing the said kid to not get up
and bleed from his ears. Get well soon kid, and hopefully that'll teach you for standing in the way of Mr Allen.
Managed to say hello to Mr Rogie, who was having some sick b/s 360's over the jump box. Around 1:30, Jim, Russ, Luke
and Dom-(who was sporting the raddest consolidated shave-do) decided to leave, and we followed soon after. I'm gutted
we didn't get to skate the bowl, and I'll be up in the next few weeks to make up for this crime. There were still too many kids
at this event-They should be hacked up and given out as prizes.

The Land Of Marble and Concrete

Originally there was to be a load of us Cov lot going over to MK, but due to illness, decorating and other assorted stuff, it
was only Craig Sean and myself that made it over. We arrived at the bus station and proceeded to explore the usual spots,
finding some other rad stuff at the same time. Security seems to have stepped up a bit since our last outing here, and the
amount of Smolik clones has also increased (who says Shorty's was dead??) After awhile of walking, taking photos of art
and stuff we bumped into the Nuneaton lot who shocked all with their super burly "jump on anything" take on things. We
hung out for about 15 minutes, in which time Craig 5050'd the longest block ever.
We headed off again looking for more bizarre stuff, when we found an odd grass bank, which I decided to drop in on (which
was nice). We ended up bumping into the Nuneaton lot again at the BP building (rad spot), which they were all skating
really well. Craig had one of the rails and Sean was cruising about, popping down the stairs and whatnot. I did some
filming, due serious "gay ankle".
It was at this time we found the "HMS Retail Sales" which was great. We'd all gotten a little tired of central MK by now and
decided to check out some banks we'd spotted on the way in. These things were big and steep, and pretty soon we'd
started dropping in on the things. Sean killed his knee on an unlucky b/s flip, and so we looked at Spiders instead.
Knackered and hurting, we popped into a local overpriced Holiday Inn for a pint, with the intention of finding the magick MK
ditches. We decided to go to the Willen lake ditches as they were easier to find, resulting in happy fun laughs all around.
This place is heaven-200 metres of transitioned concrete love, which we all skated well. I've come to the conclusion its
much more rewarding to find your own spots rather than do the tourist thing. I'm looking forward to finding more stuff next
time we go.
Good bless the automobile, without it we'd be stuck with the boring stuff.

Radlands Vert Says Goodbye

Despite the fact that they've threatened to get rid of the vert ramp ay Radlands on and off for three years now, it was still quite
a shock to hear that it was officially going. It’s been a feature of the park since it’s opening in 1992, and has seen many
legendary competitions and sessions.
When myself, Russ and Paul arrived, Trawler who’d travelled from Plymouth to pay homage greeted us. I don't think he was
too impressed with Radlands ghetto look. It is true to say Radlands has become somewhat shabbier since my last visit,
and it’s a shame to see the place looking so dirty.
After a warm up skate on the mini, more people started to arrive. Throughout the afternoon, the ramp saw Wingy, Ali Cairns,
Trawler, Dave Mountain, Dave Allen, Jim Skin, Sean Goff, Mike Edwards, Pete King, John Nixon, and a host of others give
her a good going over. In particular, Dave Allen’s ferocious pogo airs, Sean Goff’s shvuit rock and roll slide, Mike Edward's
nollie b/s disasters, and Ali Cairn's super fast 540's. Everyone skated well, none other than out own Jim Skin having some
powerful runs, as were Trawler and Wingy.
Later in the day, Damian Ince turned up and had a go; I was hoping he'd maybe change his mind about getting rid of it, as
he seemed to be skating it confidently enough.
Alas, another piece of vert and history has been wiped away.  Hopefully it won't be replaced with a set of gay blocks.
I'm not holding my breath though.

48 Hours, no water, alcohol poisoning, then death,..

It all started out on Friday night at 9pm. I picked up Daz, Craig and Russ (already pissed) and we proceeded to drive the
long way around to Wales. However, during the 6 or 7 piss stops, I get talked into going to Cardiff for a night out, which sees
everyone but me get wrecked.
After getting everyone back into the car we headed to Porthcawl, not before collecting enough porn to keep several old men
happy, (40's Plus anyone?). Porthcawl itself is a super nice place, Craig, Darren and Russ especially liking the sea at 3am.
Rumour has it that Russ found a turdfish, where as Craig and Darren were happy with a shrimp.
It was also during this time I fell out with everyone because I was completely sober and moody after the drive. Thankfully,
everything got sorted out in the morning. The Saturday saw Pob’s skate jam kick off, which had a good turn out and some
rad ramps/flatbars. Thanks to Pob, Griff and Whip who also showed us Pyle skatepark and took the time to direct us
geographical retards.
We left Wales around 3ish, bombing our way to Newquay to find a campsite. We eventually found a place called
"Rosecliston" which was a pretty nice. The Saturday night saw us dabble in the delights of Newquay nightlife (packed with
trendies and rough hen parties). There weren't many good bars, so Craig and I walked back to the campsite whilst Russ
and Daz explored more boozers.
The Sunday saw us get up at 10 (it wasn't easy) and after a rubbery McDonalds brekky; we hit up the outdoor Newquay Park.
The place was pretty big, with a super nice hipped mini. I didn't skate the street course much myself, but Craig seemed to
be enjoying himself. The vert ramp was much bigger than I was expecting, and was damp when we arrived.
After a heavy mini session (Craig rad f/s flips over the hip, Russell having super fast f/s manual roll ins) Russ Daz and I
went for a game of crazy golf, which was good fun. When we returned to the park, Mr Sean Goff had arrived for a quick skate,
which was quite a nice coincidence.
Come 3pm, we needed to hit the road. The journey was quite smelly, none of us washing much during the trip. More porn
was purchased, and we arrived home at 8:30pm. I know I enjoyed it and I hope everyone else did. I'm defiantly up for it
again!
Cockney Playstation Trip

Playstation Madness

I'm sure I'm not the only one to say this but the trip would have been a lot smoother if it weren't for the Nuneaton lot. I'm
sorry, I'm not usually this opinionated but they are very odd children.
However! The trip was great, my first as well as many others first time to Playstation, a nice sized semi-outdoor park, tucked
away underneath an underpass. It has a nice street section with loads of lines, a super fun mini ramp, nice midi and an
alright vert (not enough tranny) Unfortunately Playstation has separate times for BMXers, which I thought was a bit harsh, so
only the one coach and minibus ploughed southward.
After around 2 hours of skating, a few of us decided to check out Meanwhile, a concrete park made up of three bowls down
the road. The area was a little sketchy, but we had a good time, despite not knowing any of the lines (this was defiantly the
kind of place you needed to be local in order to skate it properly!) Buswell, Russ and Matt. A powered around the place,
landing some rad transfers.
We headed back to Playstation, mostly skating the mini ramp where much fun was had by all. The street section was also
sessioned heavily, Matt. A making the carve over the vert wall, and Dom having a rad quarter to flat transfer. Russell
seemed to be leaking from his nose all day, but skated well non-the less. Daz Quinn got straight into the vert, impressing
onlookers with some rad b/s airs. Others skating well were Mex, Jamie and Tez.A.
One thing about London is that there are a lot of people who don't have a clue going into places like this and just standing
about. I'm surprised none of these kids didn't die actually. A rad trip, and as always can't wait for the next one.

We like Trucking up the M6-(Magna in Liverpool again!!)

On the 26th May, over 120 of Cov's, Brum's Nun/Bed's and Northampton's finest rolled out onto the M6 on another Magna
trip to our favourite Liverpool spot, Rampworx. Luckily, I managed to ride in style in the minibus, avoiding the arguments,
smells and deep vein thrombosis of coach travel. The coaches pulled up at around 12ish, and the park was overrun in a
matter of minutes. New attractions include the biggest, mellowest flat bank ever, and a cut down midi ramp.
The standard of skating throughout the day was rad, with the brothers Terri and Matt ripping, Li’ll Joe Skin skating like a mini
Dave Allen, and Paul Hathaway was ripping around too. The Northampton lot skated well, Damien Ince whipping around
both street and bowl sections. The rest looked miserable but ripping non-the-less. Didn't see many of the BMXers, but I do
know that both Azza and Keith were riding hard all day.
Towards the end of the day, the usual raffle was held, being the biggest and best one yet, with more sticker throw fights and
product toss punch-ups than was healthy. Ady got a bit shirty with some kid, which was possibly the only downer of the day.
Thankfully they changed the music halfway through - (some tosser had brought a rap/wank/drum and bass cd that was
played too many times) Thankfully they put one some proper skate music and nobody suffered from bleeding ears.
A good day, complete with dirty hands and sweaty feet - Good to see plenty of all round Cov talent developing. Roll on the
next one!

BrumingBlackLabels

Three Brum roadtrip entries? We'll have to get out more. The only thing getting me through work on Saturday 19th was
thinking of the night to come. Luke drove Dom, Russell, Daz and myself to Brum-His Peugeot now fully sticker customised.
We arrived at about 8, in time to spot a few famous faces. It wasn't that busy so we didn't have to play snake to get runs.
Within the first few minutes Pob from www.boblands.com showed up with Plymouth dudes, which was rad-plenty of fun
skating, went on with them as the night went on. At about 10ish we started to skate the bowl, we had it to ourselves for
about 15 minutes, then Chalba and Adams appeared-how they get that much speed and still hang on I'll never know. Little
Jo skin was ripping, as was Skin, Luke and Russell who made an impression on the visitors. I didn't see much of Melcher
or Gilley skating, but Svitek ollied the gap over the new round rail, which ruled.
We skated vert for a bit, Darren and Luke ripping, and booze was consumed. The Label lot left about 11pm, as well as most
of the kids, so we messed round for most of the early hours. There was also a viewing of the new Label video "Blackout"
which is shockingly good.  Dom is learning far too many new tricks (f/s disasters/fakie shuv rocks and 360 boardslides-in
one night??!) We left at 5:15am, feeling pretty haggard-I wanted to have a party in the car, but no one else fancied it. All-
nighters rule-roll on the next sleep deprived night.

Birmingham Etnies Eurovision

Not really a roadtrip but this section got all the comp/event stuff in it anyway. Sunday 6th April marked the day of the finals for
both vert and street but it was the vert I wanted to see. Turned up with Russell and got straight onto the ramp to skate with
the likes of Jesse Fritch, Matais Nylen, Peter King, Terrence Bougedour, as well as the ramps usual suspects.  The
standard of riding was extremely high and I can't wait to skate with some of these dudes again.
The street comp was won by Danny Wainwright from what he told me (I hadn't a clue and felt like a right twat when I asked
him who won) I noticed that there was some incredibly big tech stuff going on, mostly by cool looking Europeans. Another
observation was an increase in ripping little kids-where they get these tricks I'll never know. All in all a great day-would have
been better if I seen the second vert heats.

Birmingham Slalom Sillyness

I was really looking forward to this event, being something completely different from your average comp. Luke, Dom, Darren,
Russ and myself went around 4ish and it was heaving when we arrived. The amount of people who had obviously come out
of a 20-year skateboard hibernation (re-awoken by the sudden old-school boom-I hate it so much now!!) was staggering
and it was quite funny to see one guy called "Johnny X" being super competitive over the race. But it wasn't all crusty-it was
rad to see Trawler after his US trip, with a full on photo gallery to boot.
From what I saw the slalom standard was high, which was great to see in the flesh. Luke one the barrlejumping, making it
look easy and pissing off several other "competitors" (someone should have told them skating is just a laugh). The main
event of sorts was the race, a timed lap over a course, which was demanding to say the least. Oscar Laguna won it in the
end, Sean Goff coming a close second whilst Luke-despite leading for 20 minutes came fourth.
Despite the initial crowds it was great to see them die down after the race, I was hoping to enter the mini ramp comp but it
turned out to be a jam/snake session that I couldn't get a run in-Haha. Russ won some stuff in that-with a selection of
massive b/s airs and some lip-trickery. It was good to see such a turnout but left me thinking that perhaps the 70's revival
had gone a bit too far-especially the playing of the Dogtown soundtrack...6 times! Thank god Bowie came along and saved
us. Maybe next year it'll all be 80's stuff-If so I'm fully making a Neil Blender outfit.

Liverpool Trip (Magna Mayhem 2003)

Ady and Yvonne have been doing these trips for nearly 5 years now and they keep getting better. How they cope with us lot
I'll never know. Two coaches were full to capacity when we rolled out of Cov, one full of us lot and the other with the
Nuneaton and Bedworth lot-(for some reason their coach seemed prone to really bad condensation-I don't want to even
think what caused that)
We arrived at Rampworx just after 12 and attacked the place straight off. Unluckily, Buswell as well as feeling ill buggered
up is hip as soon as he got there. Jim and Joe Skin were flying about, especially Joe who I am sure is genetically modified
to skate. Darren Quinn was having his floaty b/s disasters, and Luke was skating beyond my comprehension-(invert in
super tight bowl? No thanks!) Kitbag Rob was having it on his Eric Dressen, landing a rad high to low lien to tail. It was
good to see Phil Hunt and Morris riding well, considering they were under the influence of Madame booze.
As per tradition, the raffle was held in the bowl half-way through the day and proved to be the luckiest raffle for one dude who
only bought three tickets and of which all won! The prizes were kindly donated by Rampworx, Ride, Kong and TKB.
I had arranged to meet a friend up at the park, and bloody hell he can skate well, he has more lip tricks than is fair-Rogie, I
salute you. As well as you're usually Rampworx stuff, some new items had found there way into the beginners section,
including a rad mellow driveway with a block in the middle-I had so much fun on that it was unbelievable-You could hop on,
and pull styled 50-50s for about 10 seconds-Bizarre.
As well as rad skating, the Cov BMX contingent proved that they too are pushing it, especially Kev Townsend who was
bombing around the bowl all day. Phil Bridge rode well, but was in the pub mostly. Cov Guy also turned up from Derby and
rode super-consistently. Other Cov riders ripping included Duve, Blockly and Azza who spent their time mostly on the death
box/rhythm section.
The journey back took quite a while but it was made bearable by a rad selection of video entertainment. We rolled back into
Cov at 9ish (I think I was too tired to comprehend the idea of time). I'm quite sure this was the smoothest trip for Ady and
Yvonne, who deserve all the praise they get-Roll on the next one! Cheers!

Mark Abrooks 40th (Bristol)

On Sunday 9th February, Jim Skin, Magnum, Luke and I made the journey south o attend a vert session to celebrate Mark
Abrook's (Old English Zorlac Pro) b'day. The drive to Bristol was made better by Luke’s rad collection of cd's (with DJ skin
picking the tunes), which included Slayer, X-Ray Specs, Infra Riot and The Exploited. When we arrived a heated session
was just kicking off, and so we all headed to the vert to have some.
Lots of people turned up, Trawler, Sean Goff and Mon, Dave Allen, Pete Dossett, Dan-Z, Olwyn Davis, plus loads of others.
The Abrook’s were boozing a bit too much for a skate but were cheering along as Dave Allen went insane, knocking out the
best pogo air I'd ever seen. Dan-Z made a lasting impression on me, skating solidly all day, Dossett also skated well, as
did Sean (almost making a switch f/s 50-50!) The Cov contingent also ripped, Magnum having the best Todd twist I've seen
him do, Skin smithing at 100mph, Luke (despite having massive infected finger) having big b/s airs. I was well pleased as I
learnt rock fakies, f/s slashes and fakie tailslides (wahey for me!). After that session calmed down, it was to the
bar/restaurant for some food. We watched Zorlac’s "Zero Hero" vid and some old contest footy which was rad (Barry Abrook
invented the 540-not Tony Hawk kids)
At around 5ish a group decision was made to check out "Hengrove" skatepark which was about 10 minutes away. This
place is amazing, two shallow, linked, rectangular bowls and a spacious street section-It was like a dreamlands park-only
in Bristol. Luke went off over the death box, and Pete Dossett treated us to a plethora of nose blunt tricks. I wish we could
have stayed longer as there was o many lines to be had.  At 7:30 ish we decided to call it a day and buggered back up to
Covtown, to the tunes of both Flogging Molly (Jims favourite band) and the Necromantix. Thanks for the petrol money and a
great day dudes. TOTAL COVTOWN VERT DOMINATION!

Bristol Day Out

On Friday 3rd January, Jim T Skin, Joe T Skin and I went south to skate the newly resurfaced Bristol vert-I'd never been
skating in Bristol but I'm sure everyone knows that Bristol is legendary for knocking out amazing skateboarding talent, not to
mention Document magazine. But, alas it was too wet to think about checking out the famous street spots and I doubt we
would have if it were dry, as we were all up for skating vert.
It was great, as we'd arranged to meet Trawler and Mark Nyland from Plymouth, as well as Sean Goff, Mike Edwards, and
Dave Allen. It was also rad to see Mark Abrook and his friends over from Texas (Be sure to look out for "Gringo" skateboard
stuff soon!) Things took a turn for the worse when one of the dudes who were with Abrook bailed dropping in and split open
his eye, covering the flat-bottom in red stuff. He was ok-and it was good to see him come back from casualty 4 hours later.
The vert itself is a little bigger than Radlands and has more transition, for me it felt like I was riding up it for about 5 minutes
before I hit the coping! Despite this everyone skated radly, Jim was knocking out styled b/s liens to tail, Morfa Mike landed a
nollie-heel flip indy, Trawler had some rad lengthy runs as well as the best rock and rolls in the world, Sean was having
massive floaty b/s ollies, and Dave Allen skated like he was going to eat the ramp.
Little Joe was having it on the spine, landing f/s ollies 2/3rds of the way up and almost having a b/s ollie too. I was stoked
because I nailed a stalefish about 7 inches out of the vert-(Haha)
Bristol park is small, but there’s plenty there-the spine ramp's a bit whippy but I liked that. Its also got my vote because its
got a fully licensed bar and rad restaurant-(Awesome Mexican food) I'll defiantly be back there, both for the vert ramp and the
food

Night Of the Living Dead 2002

The annual Liverpool festivities kicked off on the 2nd November this year, with the Anti-Hero team helping to draw the
largest attendance. The Coventry lot, (Jim Skin, Russ Perry, Vertical Luke, Ady Carr, Darren Quinn, Chris Foy and me) set off
around eightish with a cargo of booze and an itching to skate. We arrived at the park (after a few hard shoulder piss-stops)
at 10pm, helped by Ady flooring it most of the way. Initially the sheer volume of people ripping the bowl blew us away, and I
for one couldn't wait to have a go. It was great to see so many faces there, Matt Braidy was there, snaking everyone at every
possible moment, the Birmingham lot turned up, (James Woodley skating well fast) and we also met Trawler one of the
Plymouth dudes, Trawler added some seasonal magic with a firework attached to his tail- (resulting in a red-faced owner).
Thrasher Magazine's skater of the year, Tony Trujillo was ripping-staying on everything with a catlike poise-he seriously can
ride away from anything. I was hoping to see Cardiel but there were rumours that he'd packed it in for the night.
Not before too long the traditional death match kicked off, with 4 main skaters going for gold-these were Dougie, Woodley,
Trujillo and Wingy. As things heated up, cans were thrown in (as per tradition) making the bowl a slippy death trap. Despite
this, TNT was still making airs to tail, and Wingy was still making b/s boneless from middle to shallow. In the end Wingy
won and we ad to wait until 4am for the ramp to dry up again.
We managed to skate all night, Luke and Jim being the last to come back into Ady’s wagon. We all had rubber breakfast at
McDonalds and slept most of the journey back. I'm not sure it was the best night of the living dead, and I think this had a lot
to do with the volume of kids there. The proddy toss must have been a big reason being that. Next years should be even
better though-with an 18+age limit! Thanks Ady for driving dude-It was a rad night-see you next year Liverpool!

Bolton

Yes, we've been at it again, only not as far as Livingston this time. On the 1st of September, Luke "Vertical" Hasset, Russell
"ball bag" Perry, (aka the Booze Brothers) and myself went up to Bolton, home of one of the best wooden bowls I've skated.
Perhaps it’s amazing that we even got there at all as Luke’s famous "erratic" driving made the journey up much more
interesting.
Upon arrival, we discovered that it would cost £8 each to skate for four hours (taking the piss ever-so-slightly). However it
was worth it considering we had the bowl to ourselves, and that is worth much more. Luke and Russ went off completely,
Russ knocking out half-cabs out of the bowl, and Luke grinding the two corners at the speed of light. The park itself has
everything, despite this the surfaces are masonite and super-slippy not to mention un-poppy. However, the sheer amount of
different obstacles is enough to please most.
After what seemed like 8 hours of ripping, we pulled our aching legs home and got stuck in traffic. Here we sang songs in a
club style; (My rendition of club Tropicana was rad). Bolton was defiantly a rad place to skate and really easy to get to off the
motorway. I reckon I'll be back there soon. Cheers to Luke and Russ for the invite and a rad skate.

Livingston

The Livingston road trip happened over the weekend of the 23rd and 24th of July and involved Aussie Brad, Jim Skin, Duve,
Kev Townsend, Chris Blocky, Luke Hasset and me. It was Aussie Brads idea before he returned to Australia to visit the
mother of all skate parks-LIVINGSTON. In the end seven of us were packed into a three seater transit van along with four
bikes which made for the most combatable ride ever experienced by man. It took ages to get to Livi, which was made
bearable by radio Scotland’s "Boogie Woogie Choo-Choo Train".
When we did arrive we were lucky enough to see the locals skate the place under clear skies. You can't imagine how good
these dudes are-they destroyed our perception of time and space and we were left gawping at the speed that they skated
at. After this we got something to eat, and drove around looking for somewhere to kip. However-Livingston hasn't exactly got
a polished reputation and so caution was needed in choosing a spot to sleep. Eventually, we decided on a construction
site, which was made better by a worker urging us to chance it. All was fine until about two hours later the police turned up.
However-despite being on private property, with far too many people in the van, piss, beer cans, bikes, wood and Blockly's
poo, they let us stay! I love Livingston.
It rained during the night and our spirits were only raised by Iron Maiden and a Hariiiibo party. We thought that the trip had
been in vain until we had a barbeque breakfast outside of ASDA at 6:30am. It had started to dry and the sun started to shine.
We arrived at the park, which was nearby and had it to ourselves for around two hours. Kev Townsend left some subtle
graffiti, as did Jim, spraying the Ride "R" in the bowl. It’s a place that only locals fully understand and we had not enough
time to get to grips with the park. However, once everything was dry, it was Heaven. The pool is too good for words the
halfpipe is kinked but amazing and the upper section is perfection. Lines everywhere, pure fun, and indescribably brilliant.
We spent only a night and half a day there but it had left a lasting impression on us all. Travelling back was tough as most
of us slept at one point or another. We had skated/rode hard all day and must return there at one time or another and I
intend to soon.
Trip highlights
-All of it
-Boogie Woogie Choo-Choo Train
-Hariiiibo party
-Sleeping in minus 5 star van accommodation with a mad Aussie constantly talking
